In this video Ross (from the show Friends), decides to get a spray tan.
When he gets there, the instructor gives him directions on what to do so that
he can be sprayed evenly with the machine. Ross goes in the machine and counts
too slow, so he is sprayed twice on his front and he was not sprayed at all on
his back.
While Ross is in the spray tan
machine, he pitch raises after being sprayed twice on his front. When he gets out of the machine, the
instructor comes in and Ross tells him what happened. The instructors voice
becomes a little worried and when Ross says mississippid-ly, his voice cracks a
bit and his volume raises, like he was shocked that the instructor doesn’t
count that way.
Ross goes back into the spray tan
machine so that he can finally do his back. While he is in there, he turns
around to his front to see the light and ends up getting sprayed two more times
on his front. Ross is furious when he comes out of the machine. His volume,
along with his pitch rises very high. He now releases he has been sprayed four
times with a two on his front, and zero times on his back. He tends to yell at
the instructor because he is angry at the way his spray tan turned out.
Ross uses volume to accent his
verbal cues of how mad he was when he got sprayed with the tanning machine too
many times. While Ross is in the spray tan machine, he makes noises
(vocalizations) when being sprayed in the eyes or being sprayed too much.
Throughout the clip, the instructor
and Ross, take turns speaking to each other. When the one is talking, the other
is not. This way they understand what each other are saying. Ross and the
instructor use interaction management to converse. They both use nonverbal and
verbal communication when talking to each other. The instructor uses his hands
as an illustrator when using the number two or four.
Ross was the main person in this
video clip to represent vocalics because his tone of voice, pitch, and volume
fluctuated throughout the clip.
